Among your creams and serums, antioxidants are the beauty world’s superheroes. If you haven’t used them yet, you’re missing out!
Mona Gohara, an associate clinical professor of dermatology, explains, “Antioxidants are there to neutralize what we call free radicals. Free radicals are pesky chemical particles that can wreak cosmetic havoc on your skin. They cause fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and sagging.”
If you have specific skincare goals, you may want to focus first on products containing their primary antioxidants. The antioxidants protect the skin against free radicals, aka oxidative stress, but they also have other benefits. Here are the highlights.
Vitamin A Is Used To Smooth The Skin
Regarding collagen and elastin production, retinol and retinoids are game changers. Morgana Colombo, M.D., of Integrated Dermatology, said, “These are “the number one anti-aging ingredients recommended by dermatologists.” A vitamin A product exfoliates the skin and promotes collagen and elastin production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and creating a more even skin tone and texture. They may cause slight irritation and work best when combined with a moisturizer.
Vitamin C Brightens Skin
The antioxidant vitamin C is your best bet if you want a brightened complexion to combat pigmentation issues like melasma or acne scarring. Dr. Gohara says it brings radiance and glow to the skin. A vitamin C supplement can reduce melanin production for hyperpigmentation, increase collagen production, and protect the skin from UV rays.
A Soothing Agent: Niacinamide
Choosing a product containing niacinamide is an excellent choice if your skin is prone to inflammation or irritation. The anti-inflammatory properties of niacinamide make it an excellent antioxidant for people with acne or rosacea who also have sensitive skin. Niacinamide also calms sensitive skin by hydrating, strengthening the skin barrier, and promoting the production of ceramides, which holds water and keeps skin healthy.
Hyaluronic Acid Is Used To Hydrate
Healthy and hydrated skin produce more cells, creating a smoother, softer, more radiant appearance. Hyaluronic acid reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the skin. The antioxidant attracts water into the skin, maintaining hydration and supporting skin cells in peak conditions.
