Keeping your face clean is the easiest thing you can do. Most people aren’t aware of how often they get it wrong, which leads to irritation.
Dr. Shari Lipner, associate professor of clinical dermatology, said, “There’s a lot of misconceptions about washing people’s faces. And I think some people overdo it in a way that can harm the skin.”
Face cleansing is an essential daily step, but using the right products correctly is vital to what experts say about washing your face.
Regularly Wash Your Face
Dr. Emily Newsom, a board-certified dermatologist at UCLA Health, said our skin changes every few weeks.
She explained that skin cells constantly shed, clogging pores. In addition, it exacerbates acne. You can end up with dirty skin from sweat, pollution, and skin care products.
But Don’t Overwash Your Face
Face washing is essential, but don’t overdo it.
“Excessive washing of the face can allow bacteria to penetrate the skin, causing inflammation and infections,” Lipner explained.
You can probably cut down on washing your face if it leaves your skin dry, inflamed, or tight.
Cleanse Gently, Without Fragrance
Lipner suggests using a gentle cleanser that is fragrance- and alcohol-free.
The best way to get the most out of such cleansers is to leave them on for a few minutes. Newsom recommended avoiding scrubs as your daily cleanser, even if you are tempted.
Apply Cool Or Lukewarm Water To Your Face
You’ll want to wet your face first to activate your cleanser. Lipner recommended using lukewarm, not hot, water.
It can damage your protective skin barrier if you use super hot water, leaving you vulnerable to bacteria and irritation.
After Rinsing, Pat Your Face Dry
After using the cleanser, rinse your face with water. Once again, lukewarm water is best.
The experts recommend patting dry your skin with a soft towel.
“If you rub the skin, it will irritate it,” Lipner said. “So just a gentle pat with a soft towel is is how not to irritate the skin.”
