Upon assuming office, JFK became the first U.S. leader to travel in a specially modified aircraft, a privilege his predecessors had not enjoyed. This pivotal shift occurred in 1962 when President Kennedy started using a specially crafted Boeing 707 exclusively tailored to his needs. While this practice continued with subsequent presidents, the same aircraft, the modified Boeing 707, also bore the solemn duty of transporting President Kennedy’s remains back to Washington after his tragic assassination in Dallas in 1963.
