Tea tree oil may have become part of your arsenal if you have experienced skin and scalp problems like acne or dandruff. Many of these problems can be addressed by this ingredient, which has anti-inflammatory properties.
Tea tree oil can cause allergic or ultra-sensitive skin reactions even when administered correctly. It is, however, an essential oil, which makes some of us worry. Several dermatologists and an esthetician evaluated this ingredient. Here’s how to use this oil safely in your beauty routine to boost skin and hair.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is produced by distilling the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, formally known as tea tree. Many skin care companies have tapped this naturally occurring, multifunctional oil. There are antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties in this essential oil. Angelo P. Thrower, MD, PA, owner of Dr. Thrower’s Skincare, says it is an effective ingredient in skin and hair products.
Dr. Thrower says tea tree oil alone can cause dryness, blisters, and rashes. He recommends diluting tea tree oil with a carrier oil that is mild, moisturizing, and skin-safe for making your tincture. Make sure this ingredient is diluted. “Apply a drop or two of the diluted oil on the inner forearm, and if it does not irritate within a day, you may use it,” advises Dr. Thrower. Do a patch test if you have tea tree oil allergies or sensitivities.
Using Tea Tree Oil For Skin Care
If you suffer from acne, it is best to use skin care products that contain tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has healing and nourishing properties, so it’s best used for acne treatments. It can also reduce oil production thanks to its anti-staphylococci properties, which reduce bacterial colonization.
Using Tea Tree Oil For Hair Care
In addition to removing excess oil, dead skin, and buildup from your scalp, tea tree oil can also unblock the pores on your scalp. It prevents yeast accumulation, which causes dandruff. Adding a few drops to your shampoo can maintain healthy scalp flora and prevent chemical buildup and dead skin cell accumulation.
How Long Does It Take To See Results?
Dr. Saedi recommends using tea tree oil daily on the skin and hair. It takes four weeks for this botanical ingredient to show its benefits. You should always consult your doctor if your ailment persists or does not improve – regardless of your skin type.
Tea Tree Oil Is Not Suitable For Everyone
However, tea tree oil isn’t for everyone. Dr. Saedi avoids it entirely for those with active eczema, as their skin barrier is compromised. Applying tea tree oil directly to the skin may cause more inflammation and irritation.”
