The Sutton Hoo ship’s burial site, believed to be buried in 625AD, was excavated in 1939. Archaeologists found the shape of a boat beneath a mound, along with extraordinary treasures in the burial chamber of the ship’s center.
Despite taking time to understand the treasure’s precise significance, the discovery proved to be an Anglo-Saxon royal burial of incomparable richness and revolutionized the understanding of early England. This decorative and resplendent helmet was the most significant find in the excavation.
The helmet was in pieces when found as the burial chamber had caved. They believed it was both a crown and a functional armor piece. Currently stored in the British Museum in London, it is one of only four known complete Anglo-Saxon helmets. There was also jewelry, gold, and silver in the chamber, making it one of the most significant English discoveries.
