20 Archaeological Discoveries That Are Worth Millions (And Billions)

San José Galleon

Where Is It Found: Cartagena, Columbia

Worth: $17 – 22 billion.

The San José Galleon was a 64-gun, three-masted galleon of the Spanish Navy, launched in 1698. It sank in the battle off the Cartagena coast (Colombia) in 1708 while filled with gold, silver, and emeralds worth about $17-22 billion.

For years, the ship lay submerged and lost in the sea. Colombian officials finally rediscovered the ship in 2015 near Cartagena. Believed to be the holy grail of shipwrecks, finding it means that the owners become billions richer. The question of ownership is heavily debated between Spain and the United States, both fightings to debunk Colombia’s claim.
