Unconditional Love Doesn’t Necessarily Make Your Relationships Stronger

Family and romantic and platonic relationships are often viewed as the epitome of unconditional love by our society. It is paramount to love others without strings attached, as it is arguably the highest form of love. Does unconditional love promote health, or is it just an obligation?

Consider a parent’s love for their child. Juliet Kinkade-Black, LMFT, the family therapist, said, ” unconditional love is often used to discuss parental love [because]it refers to love that we actively give someone even when they make mistakes or fail to meet our expectations.

Unconditional Love: What Does It Mean?

The Oxford English Dictionary defines love as “deep affection or fondness for someone.” Unconditional love means displaying an intensity of devotion to another without any conditions or limitations. Kinkade-Black defines unconditional love as extending love without expecting reciprocity or benefit.

Love Is Unconditional, Isn’t It?

In addition to hope and mutual acceptance, unconditional love can have a darker side. In many cases, people define unconditional love as loving someone regardless of their experience, so they often find themselves in situations involving broken boundaries, discomfort being caused, or danger.

Is It Beneficial To Give And Receive Unconditional Love?

Kinkade-Black says that loving and appreciating those around you will enhance your bond with them, flaws and all. There is no need for reciprocal expectations in every relationship. Having no expectations makes friendships, family, and coworker relationships more prosperous and enjoyable for everyone.

Is Love Truly Unconditional?

It’s unclear. Despite your parents’ unconditional love, the fact that you are their child, in and of itself, is a condition. It has been shown that oxytocin, released in the brain when a person feels love and connection, helps parents bond with their children, increasing trust and support. Without oxytocin, parents do not share the same bond with other children. Consequently, they don’t experience unconditional love.
