Experts Explain The Science Behind Yawning When You’re Bored

According to Dr. Matthew D. Epstein, a medical director, our first experience with yawning occurs in the womb. However, outside the womb, yawning can be seen as a sign of boredom, like during a dull lecture, a lengthy journey, or while watching TV. In truth, the reasons behind yawning are more complex than mere boredom. So, if someone covers their mouth while talking to you, don’t assume offense too quickly. Experts will now clarify the nature of yawning and its causes and explore theories linking yawning to boredom.

Why Do We Yawn When Bored?

Dr. Karen D. Sullivan, a neuropsychologist, debunks the myth that boredom causes yawning, highlighting its association with low vigilance states like sleepiness. Yawning boosts arousal and circulation and has a social-evolutionary purpose in animals, signifying dominance. In humans, uncovered yawning may be perceived as disrespectful due to its interpersonal solid communication nature.

When Excessive Yawning Raises Concerns

While excessive yawning commonly suggests drowsiness and poses no significant concerns, it is crucial to remain attentive to certain situations. In some instances, an abundance of yawns may signal more serious underlying issues, such as vasovagal syncope (characterized by a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate, potentially leading to fainting), neurological conditions like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis (MS), or, although rare, the presence of a brain tumor.

Stopping An Incoming Yawn

Yawning, similar to sneezing, is typically perceived as an involuntary action originating from the same brain region, explains Sullivan. In contrast to sneezing, yawning can be consciously managed by applying deliberate mind control. So, if you find yourself on the verge of a yawn during a one-on-one meeting with your boss, there is still a chance to suppress it. Sullivan suggests that yawning’s social component plays a role in this intriguing ability.
