Even though Hawkeye wasn’t one of the Avengers that Thanos snapped into non-existence, he just snapped in a different way. And, there are indications that the character that resulted from that snapping, Ronin, may be making a return to the MCU.
Jeremy Renner, who portrayed both Hawkeye and Ronin in Avengers: Endgame, took to his Twitter page. There he posted a selfie, showing him dressed in the Ronin costume with the caption “Back when.”
It is not known if the selfie was taken during the filming of Endgame, or more recently during filming in Atlanta on the set of the Disney+ series Hawkeye.
Even if the selfie is indeed from Endgame, many speculate that Renner is dropping hints of what is to come on Hawkeye. It could be that the timeline for the series may be set close to the events that transpired in Avengers: Endgame, most likely portrayed and shown in a flashback.
Although fans only got a hint of the Ronin character in the film, as his screentime was less than three minutes long, five years of canon backstory can be used that audiences of the MCU have not laid their eyes on yet.
This unseen backstory gives Marvel Studios a lot to work on within the upcoming series. The storyline can delve into those dark years during which Hawkeye took on the murderous vigilante Ronin’s persona.
Then there is the fact that Ronin is a white guy, running around dressed as a Japanese ninja. With all that aside, the Ronin character was a major part of Clint Barton’s character, as it marked his transition into what would prove to be a dark chapter in for Hawkeye within the MCU.
Hawkeye has a current premiere date set for the fall of 2021 and will stream online on Disney+.
