Summer might be winding down, but for many, as long as there isn’t snow on the ground, they’ll be firing up the grill. You’re familiar with the various meats you can grill, but did you know you can grill all kinds of fruit and veggies, too? Here are the most delicious and unexpected:
High-sugar fruits
Sugary fruits like peaches, pineapple, watermelon, and even grapes are amazing on the grill. Their juices caramelize beautifully, so you don’t need to add any sugar. For grapes, since they’re so small, stick them on a kebab and grill. Peaches, watermelon, and pineapple can just be sliced and lay flat over the heat.
Brie cheese
Won’t cheese immediately melt on a hot grill? Not if it’s brie that’s still in the rind. The creamy cheese will be protected, and get a mild smoky flavor as it softens inside.
Tofu
If you eat tofu frequently, this probably isn’t a surprise. For those who don’t eat it often, however, grilling is one of the most flavorful ways to prepare the otherwise flavorless protein. Just be sure to use extra-firm tofu and brush all over with oil, so it doesn’t stick to the grill. For even more flavor, soak the tofu in a marinade beforehand.
Lettuce
This is one of the most surprising, because lettuce seems so delicate. However, when you cut a big wedge in half and grill it for just a few minutes, it gets crispy and flavored with a light char. The smoky flavor is complemented really well with creamy dressings like ranch.
Avocados
Elevate your salads (or toast) by quickly grilling avocado halves. The fatty, creamy interior takes on a smoky flavor. To prepare, cut in half, remove the pit, and brush lightly with some oil before laying on the grill for a few minutes.
