According to Sarah Mirkin, RD, CPT, your nails are dependent on a healthy diet to be strong. Your nails will be the first part of the body to show you are malnourished, deficient in vitamins, and skimping on protein. Mirkin notes that eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and healthy fats will help your nails stay healthy and strong.

Foods Containing Water
Nail stylist Gracie J, the founder of The Editorial Nail, says hydration is essential. Cuticle oil is vital on the outside, but water is necessary internally.
Gracie J says, “Water aids in delivering nutrients and oxygen to the cells.”
According to Gracie J, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids and thiamine facilitate healthy cell growth, promoting good nails and hair. Flaxseed, in particular, has been linked to hair and nail health.
Mirkin says, “Flaxseed is also high in magnesium, which many people don’t get enough of. Magnesium is essential for maintaining nail health and preventing the formation of ridges on the nail bed.”
Vitamin A and C-rich grapefruit are one of Gracie J’s favorite foods for nail health-but, their antioxidants are the real reason to choose them.
Mirkin says, “grapefruit seed extract has potent anti-fungal qualities, making it an effective natural therapy for nail fungus and athlete’s foot.”
Salmon is high in vitamin D, protein, biotin, zinc, copper, selenium, vitamin B1 and B6, and omega-3 fatty acids-all of which are suitable for nails.
Salmon is also Gracie J’s favorite food since it contains fatty acids and helps maintain cell growth, so she gets healthy nails and hair.
