‘The LEGO Movie 2’ Has a Release Date

Everything is about to be awesome again. The official sequel to “The LEGO Movie” was announced this week and the official movie poster was also revealed. The news was announced on Twitter nearly four years after the release of the first film. The film ended up being one of the most entertaining animated movies of the year. The sequel, “The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part” will be arriving in theaters on February 9, 2019.

“The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part” will be directed by Mike Mitchell, who previously helmed the animated adventure “Trolls.” Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the first film, will write the first draft of the new film. Raphael Bob-Waksberg later signed on to the project for a script re-write after the attached director Rob Schrab left the project.

Matt Fogel completed the most recent version of the script and Dan Lin will return to produce the film. Both actor Christ Pratt and Elizabeth Banks have signed on to return as Emmett and  Wyldstyle. They will be joined by newcomer Tiffany Haddish, who has also signed onto the project, although her role is being kept under wraps.

The sequel is expected to take place four years after the original film, and is described as a “big musical” with “space action.”  The film will once again feature the real world boy being encouraged to play with his younger sister, as evident by the last scene of the first film. Duplo blocks are also expected to be featured more, as that is the sister’s preferred toy to play with.

Some of the more minor characters are also expected to reprise their roles, as the first film had an extensive cast of LEGO characters, which will be expanded for this sequel. The reason for the four-year gap between projects is that animation takes time and the film spinoff “The LEGO Batman Movie” was released back in 2017 after the character’s breakout performance in the first film.
