“Rocketman” Trails “Godzilla” For Box Office Weekend King

As we enter into June, the summer movie box office continues to be a battle of many blockbusters. As “Avengers: Endgame” slowly begins its descent down the top 10, the top spot is open for others to claim. And it was a close one this weekend.

Of course, the top contender was “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” both a spin-off of the iconic giant monster from Japan and a sequel to 2014’s “Godzilla” produced by Legendary. While the film did live up to its title of king by being #1 for the weekend, it wasn’t a size as massive as the monster himself. The movie debuted to a domestic gross of $49 million, leaving a long ways to go to clear its towering $170 million budget. The film is currently in tough territory when competing with Disney’s “Aladdin,” the live-action remake of the animated classic, still doing strong in its second weekend by making $42 million to push its domestic total to $185 million.

Taron Egerton as Elton John in Rocketman from Paramount Pictures.

“Rocketman,” the Elton John biopic, just couldn’t quite compete with these two blockbusters as it arrived at #3 for the weekend with a premiere gross of $25 million. Not very strong for a $40 million budget but the strong critical praise could push the film to have legs through June. “Ma,” a new horror thriller starring Octavia Spencer, debuted just below with a weekend gross of $18 million.
