Road trips seem to be a hot topic right now amongst all the travel dreamers in our generation. Although these can be the trip of a lifetime, the thought of planning it can make it go on the back burner for awhile! Where do you even begin when you’ve never even been to these places? It’s fresh territory and the longest road trip you’ve ever taken is a weekend getaway that was no more than 6 hours. How will you even survive in a car with someone for any longer than that?! Don’t fret! There are some great tips on how to get started so you can get to planning that once in a lifetime trip!
First things first, figure out where you want to go. This may take the longest part of the process because there is just SO much to look into. Is this a West-Coast road trip, East-Coast, or all around the Country? Are there “must-do’s” on your list, like that roadside attraction you’ve always wanted to see or that awesome burger joint you’ve always wanted to try? Make a list of everything and every place that you just won’t compromise on. This will help you get a rough idea on the stops, length of the trip, and even an idea on your budget.
Once you figure out where you want to go, now it’s time to make a game plan! With knowing your stops and looking at a map, you will easily figure out the best route. So now is the time to start working on that itinerary. Yes, it’s always great to be flexible on trips (especially road trips) but having a loose schedule of what days you’ll be where, where you’re staying, and activities you have planned will help tremendously! Don’t be scared. Just start with the first day, research where you are wanting to stay, along with any fun things planned and put it on the list! This also goes with putting together a budget spreadsheet. OK, maybe you don’t have to go as far as making a spreadsheet – but if you are on a tight budget, I highly recommend breaking down all costs day-by-day so you can plan accordingly! Having these two items will make the whole trip seem real!
That’s it! Figuring out where you want to go, then making a game plan to execute this awesome trip is all you need to know. Yes, it may sound easier said than done ,but with a trip of a lifetime comes a little bit of work as well! Safe travels!
