What once was considered both outlandish and unprofessional is now becoming more and more commonplace. That is, having pets such as cats or dogs, in the professional workplace.
This is a trendy choice of the Dutch, with some studies showing that with the pets being close by, stress levels reduce considerably and productivity is greater.
The bringing of pets to the workplace is slowly beginning to catch on with more prominent companies here in the US. It is not unusual for those who are employed by Google to be seen taking their dogs to work with them each day.
Again, what was once considered outlandish and viewed as being unprofessional is rapidly becoming the everyday norm.
Virginia Commonwealth University conducted a study a few years back, and the research data showed that having a dog around had quite a few notable advantages. The results showed that, first and foremost, people would not experience near the amount of stress they usually did, when a dog was present.
Marie-Jose Enders, who studies the benefits of a relationship between humans and animals at the Open University, said the work atmosphere was considerably improved when there was a dog present in the office.
“Not only does your cortisol level drop when you stroke a dog, but you also produce more of the hormone oxytocin, which makes you feel more relaxed and happy.”
It was also noted that if you are having a hard day at work, a dog will aid in putting stressful situations into a better perspective. When the stress gets too much, one can take their dog for a walk, and at the same time, distance themselves for a while from the problem at hand.
Finally, studies determined that having a pet at work increased an individual’s motivation. Since they experience less stress, they were shown to like their work more and as such productivity was shown to improve.
