Lord of the Rings Gets An Anime Sidestory

The biggest news regarding Lord of the Rings right now is the development of a TV series over at Amazon. Priced at over $400 million in the budget for its first season, it is looking to be the most expensive TV series ever made. While development on that series is still going forward, there’s even more Lord of the Rings media on the way. And if you’re really into anime, this news should interest you greatly.

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation are developing an anime film entitled The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The story will focus specifically on the lesser addressed tale of the fortress of Helm’s Deep. The film will act as both a side-story and companion piece to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. It will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and will focus on the untold story behind the fortress of Helm’s Deep, delving into the life and bloodsoaked times of one of Middle-earth’s most legendary figures; the mighty King of Rohan – Helm Hammerhand.

Sam Register, the President of Warner Bros’s animation division, spoke highly of this new project:

“This will be yet another epic portrayal of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world that has never been told before. We’re honored to partner with much of the incredible talent behind both film trilogies, along with new creative luminaries to tell this story. And so it begins”

There’s no word yet on the voice casting or when the film will debut. It’s likely that the film will either premiere on VOD or on HBO Max for being a Warner Bros production.
