The “Golden Girls” sitcom is the inspiration behind a new TikTok trend aimed at senior citizens.
The coastal grandmother style is popular these days because of its breezy, relaxed, neutral-toned look, right out of a Nancy Meyers flick.
There is an alternative trend called “fancy grandma” based on this vibe.
Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb discussed the looks and realized that they matched the styles worn by stars of “The Golden Girls.”
Jenna described, “Fancy grandmas can be any age, and they’re eccentric, they love to accessorize with scarves and elaborate earrings, and their houses are full of colorful tchotchkes.”
Hoda remarked, “Oh, it’s like the Golden Girls.”
InStyle describes the “fancy grandma” look like one of bright colors and shiny fabrics, cardigans, statement coats, and functional shoes.
Essentially, the fancy grandma look says, “Life is too short for boring clothes — and uncomfortable shoes.”
Jenna said that fancy grandmas also love snacks. Suddenly Jenna realized she could have a fancy grandma in her life.
Jenna asked Hoda, “Wait, are you a fancy grandma?” But you’re not. You don’t dress like a fancy grandma.”
Hoda interjected, “I don’t have snacks and don’t have anything fancy in my house. I have it in my dressing room.”
Jennifer pointed out to her co-host that she eats many snack food.
She said, “You do too have snacks. Are you kidding?. We’ve gotten into fights about how you eat in bed your snacks.”
Despite Hoda’s claim that she isn’t a “fancy grandma,” Jenna argues that her “tchotchke” collection fits the guidelines of the trend.
Jenna said, “And you do have tchotchkes, too. Remember when I cleaned out your office?”
Hoda wasn’t convinced.
Jenna interjected, “That’s just stuff that gets left there. That’s called a tchotchke.”
