James Gunn has had quite the career in directing comic book movies. He went from directing small and savage satires on the nature of superheroes with the film Super to developing the best underdog ensemble of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn also helmed the sequel of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and when a controversy bubbled over some old tweets, he was kicked out of Marvel and went over to Warner Bros where he was given the chance to direct The Suicide Squad. Realizing the studio was losing one of its best directors and that James had since apologized for those old tweets that he has grown away from, Marvel hired him back to finish his film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which had a script already to go before he left. Now it seems that script is finally getting made into a film.
While Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will debut this year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will start production. When this year? Well, there’s no specific date. There’s only been confirmation from both actor Dave Bautista via Entertainment Weekly and now Gunn via Twitter that production is indeed commencing in 2021.
At the moment, Gunn’s plate is currently bursting. Not only will he be working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but also a Holiday Special for the ensemble. Oh, and as for Suicide Squad, he’s also developing a spin-off series for that with the character of Peacemaker. While we don’t know the official date of the Peacemaker series, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be hitting Disney+ in 2022 while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be heading for theaters in 2023.
