  • 1/2 teaspoon anise extract
  • Extra powder sugar

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Nonpareil Sprinkles

Here are the directions that you need to follow in order to create these Italian Christmas cookies:

  1. First, you need to preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Then, in a medium bowl, whisk together all of the flour, salt, and baking powder. Now set that bowl aside for now.
  3. In a different mixing bowl, slowly beat the butter and sugars together until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  4. Now it’s time to add in the eggs, but make sure to do this one egg at a time. Wait until the egg is fully incorporated to dd the next one. Now, you want to add in the vanilla and anise flavoring to the mixture.
  5. Then, you want to slowly mix in the entire flour mixture. Do not overbeat the mixture, but wait until the ingredients have just combined to form a dough-like consistency.
  6. Now it is important to fully cover and refrigerate this dough for at least one hour.
  7. When the dough is ready to bake, line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. Now, you want to roll the dough into 1 inch balls. Dip the bottom of a small glass into some powdered sugar and press each ball down slightly to get the right shape and sugar coverage for each piece.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes.
  10. Remove and cool completely.
  11. To make the glaze:
  12. Sift two cups of powdered sugar in a bowl. Whisk in milk and vanilla.
  13. Dip top of each cookie in the glaze. Garnish with some nonpareil sprinkles.
  14. Allow glaze to dry before freezing.
