Homemade Black Bottom Cupcakes Recipe

Everyone loves a good cupcake. It’s a simple and versatile dessert option that can have many flavors. Cupcakes can also be simple to make, with many simple ingredients that most people have in their pantries.

These cupcakes are chocolatey and gooey, have chocolate bottoms and creamy tops! You can also experiment with the recipe to make a peanut butter swirl or even try a savory twist.

Here are the ingredients you will need to make these black bottom cupcakes:

  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ teaspoon vinegar
  • ¾ cups flour
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • ¼ cup confectioners sugar
  • ⅛ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips


Here are the directions to bake and build these black bottom cupcakes:

First, you need to preheat the oven to 350°F.  Line the cupcake pan with papers or if you don’t have liners make sure you grease the cupcake pans you will use with some oil so the cupcakes don’t stick to the pan.

Then, in a medium bowl whisk together butter, both sugars and the egg until everything is well combined. Next, whisk in oil and vanilla until it’s combined. Then, whisk in the milk and vinegar together.  Then, add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Finally, whisk the wet mixture together until it has reached a smooth consistency.

Using a cooke scoop or ice cream scoop, fill the chocolate batter into the cupcake cups so it’s filled about two-thirds of the way full. It’s important not to overfill these cups because you will add more batter.

Then, in a small bowl, mix the cream cheese, sugar and salt together until it’s completely smooth. Then spoon cheesecake batter atop chocolate batter filling the cupcake cups until they are three-fourths of the way full. Sprinkle chocolate chips atop each cupcake, or another topping if you choose. You can also swirl the cream cheese in the batter for a marbling technique.

Finally, bake the cupcakes for 16 to 18 minutes at 350°F. The cupcakes are done when the chocolate batter poofs up and the cheesecake portion sets. Allow these cupcakes to completely cool before you remove them from the cupcake pan.
