Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Antiperspirant Safety

Most of us follow the same routine after a shower: We apply deodorant to our underarms, or we use an antiperspirant. One is much more controversial than the other, which is one of the key differences between the two.

Dr. Janice Johnston, the chief medical officer, explains, “Antiperspirant is a skin care product that controls sweat and consists of aluminum salts. Deodorant is a cosmetic product that controls and reduces body odor by minimizing bacterial growth from body parts, especially the armpits.”

A deodorant improves your overall smell, whereas an antiperspirant stops sweating. Many underarm products contain both. However, some people may prefer not to use antiperspirant products.

There has been controversy over the safety of antiperspirants for almost 60 years. Johnston said, “A few studies in the 1960s and 1970s link aluminum in antiperspirant with Alzheimer’s, and armpits are close to lymph nodes and breasts, making it a risk for breast cancer.”

Scientists are still unclear whether aluminum found in Alzheimer’s disease brains is due to excessive aluminum exposure or to the disease itself. Recent studies confirm that antiperspirant use does not cause Alzheimer’s disease. Several studies also examined whether antiperspirants cause breast cancer but found no association.

A significant concern with antiperspirants is that they clog your pores by preventing sweating. Some people claim this means you are keeping toxins in your body, but that isn’t the case.

Consequently, applying antiperspirant will not cause you to sweat about breast cancer, toxic buildup, or Alzheimer’s disease. It is also possible, as with any skincare product, to develop allergies that are not directly related to the antiperspirant.

Despite the safety of antiperspirants, some prefer a more natural approach and leave out unnecessary chemicals and ingredients. You may want to reduce sweating or find out what works for you. Experts suggest the following alternatives to antiperspirants:

  • Maintain a healthy diet
