Cacti are among the most low-maintenance plants. Cacti can withstand droughts thanks to their succulent stems and foliage, but that’s not their only benefit.
The Cactaceae family contains areoles, little bumps outside the plant with excellent capabilities, unlike many succulents. Cacti can take on thousands of captivating forms thanks to their areoles, which sprout their spines, flowers, branches, and leaves.
The best way to grow cacti in the garden is in containers unless you live in their native climate. Here are our cactus garden tips for soil, containers, watering, and overwintering. These types of cactus also adapt well to houseplant life.
You need to place desert cacti in the sunniest spot in your house, rotate pots regularly to keep their shape and add artificial light if necessary. Tropical types require a bit more care, but you can find instructions for them on our list.
There are several types of cactus that you can grow at home, even indoors:
Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera Bridgesii)
Christmas cactus flowers will return every year during the holidays with proper care. The cactus grows among trees and rocks in its native Brazil. Ensure it gets bright indirect light, not direct sunlight. A humid climate is preferable to the Christmas cactus, which also needs more water than desert types.
Fairy Castle Cactus (Acanthocereus Tetragonus)
How could a cactus be whimsical? Any whimsical garden will be enhanced by its varied stems, which resemble castle turrets. Cactus that grows slowly can reach 6 feet tall. These cactuses rarely produce flowers – they’re often sold with artificial flowers attached. Make sure it gets plenty of sunlight.
Saguaro Cactus (Carnegiea Gigantea)
The saguaro cactus can be found in the Sonoran Desert and has lived for 200 years. It grows slowly for the first eight years of life, so it can be grown indoors if it receives enough direct sunlight.
Star Cactus (Astrophytum Asterias)
Star cacti (also called sea urchin or starfish cacti) are small plants perfect for succulent gardens indoors. These petite cactus have yellow or white blooms. It should receive plenty of sunlight.
