Experts Say That Argan Oil Is The Secret To Healthy, Shiny Hair

While drenching your hair in oil may sound strange, castor oil, jojoba oil, rosemary oil, and argan oil have found their way into hair care routines for their therapeutic properties. It is a myth that hair “growth” oils will make hair grow faster. Instead, they minimize damage and breakage, resulting in longer, healthier hair.

A coating of argan oil on hair strands makes them feel and look healthier. Nowadays, you’ll find it in all kinds of shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks.

Our Beauty Lab chemists regularly test hair products containing argan oil – to find out precisely what it can do for your hair, we consulted them, as well as board-certified dermatologist Monica Y Li and hair wellness expert Meerika Khanna.

What Is Argan Oil?

Morocco’s argan tree produces argan oil from its fruit kernels, called Argania Spinosa. Rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and oleic and linoleic acids, it is renowned as a moisturizing ingredient in skincare and hair care. Dr. Li calls it “liquid gold.”

How Can Argan Oil Benefit Your Hair?

Argan oil may benefit hair health, but there is no evidence that it will promote hair growth.

Butler says, “avoiding damage and conditioning hair to prevent friction and breakage is the best way to grow out long hair.  The only reliable treatment for hair loss at the scalp is FDA-approved drug products like Rogaine.” There are plenty of other benefits to reap from using argan oil on your hair:

  • Moisturizes and softens hair
  • Avoids breakage
  • Provides relief for the scalp
  • Fixes hair color damage

When Should I Apply Argan Oil To My Hair?

Apply argan oil twice or three times a week to your hair. Adapt it according to your scalp and hair. It’s probably better to be more scarce when you’ve got oily hair, while damaged or dry hair can be more generous. You should clean your hair after using argan oil, as it leaves some residue.

Can I Use Argan Oil On Wet Or Dry Hair?

Argan oil is good for wet and dry hair.

Dr. Li says, “Think of it as a moisturizing leave-in conditioner. On wet hair, it protects hair from heat during blow-drying or styling. A few drops of argan oil can give your mane increased shine on dry hair.”
