Countdown To Christmas 2022. Here’s How And Why

People prepare for Christmas before December 25 even though the festival is celebrated on that day. Despite its religious roots, Christmas has evolved beyond its traditions to include cookies, tinsel, ribbons, and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

Here’s all you need to know about Christmas 2022 if you’ve already hung up your stockings and are excited about Santa Claus coming to town.

Christmas 2022: When Is It?

It will be Christmas on December 25, 2022. Britannica says the English term “Christmas” comes from its previous name, “Yule.” Other countries have names that are closer to nativity, such as “Navidad” in Spanish, “Natale” in Italian, and “Noel.” in French.

The exact date of Jesus Christ’s birth is unclear, but Christmas celebrates his birth. Following History.com, Pope Julius I set December 25 as the official date for the Nativity Feast. Many countries celebrate Christmas as a secular holiday despite its religious origins. Since 1870, the United States has recognized Christmas as a federal holiday.

Does Santa Exist?

As we see him today, Kris Kringle is very different from the legend we grew up with. In many depictions, Santa Claus is portrayed as a jolly, older, and larger man with a white beard, always dressed in red. Santa Claus’ origins date back to approximately 280 A.D. when St. Nicholas was born. In honor of his piety and kindness, the monk became known as “the protector of children and sailors.” His feast day is December 6.

Why Is This Saint Associated With Christmas?

Throughout Europe, St. Nicholas was a popular figure, particularly in Holland. Santa Claus derives from the Dutch nickname, Sint Nikolaas, which means Saint Nicholas in Dutch. In 1804 at the New York Historical Society’s annual meeting, John Pintard distributed woodcuts of St. Nicholas, establishing the current depiction of Santa Claus. Our familiar image of a fireplace and stockings hung over it adorned the backgrounds of these cuttings.

Washington Irving popularized Sinter Klaas’s stories in 1809 in “The History of New York,” in which Irving referred to Claus as “the patron saint of New York.” As a result, Santa Claus is known for delivering toys to good children using his sleigh and his reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph, whose legend is legendary.
