Can Anxiety Cause You To Have Bad Dreams?

Many of us get dreams in our sleep, but it depends on whether it is good or bad? You might get anxious by those dreams as it might be like someone is breaking my house, bugs crawling, etc.

Many factors, including stress or anxiety, can trigger nightmares. Sometimes the everyday stress of everyday life, such as a problem at home or school, triggers nightmares.

Experts says that anxiety can contribute to bad dreams. Alex Dimitriu, MD and founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine, explains, “Anxious thoughts while someone is asleep can manifest themselves as bad dreams or stress dreams. Stress dreams can happen when you are missing an important event or a flight or a test that can result in mental activity and activate the body and result in a lighter, more fitful sleep.”

The reason why we do not dream is not fully understood. Through research, we know that the brain continues to work on solving problems during sleep. Dreaming can be a good thing, even if it’s uncomfortable at that moment.

How Can You Prevent Bad Dreams From Anxiety?

Bad dreams cannot be prevented entirely but can be focused on managing the anxiety throughout, which may help in alleviating the problem. Experts suggest going for a walk, talking to friends, meditating, and journaling to process your feelings throughout the day.

Dimitriu explains, ”People with insomnia or stress dreams should spend 20 to 30 minutes each evening problem-solving and coming up with solutions with a pen and paper at hand.”

You could also spend a couple of minutes figuring out what your anxious dreams are trying to say to you. “You have the answers within you to ‘crack the code’ on the symbols, people, actions, etc. in your dreams.”
