Debbie Attias, a practitioner at Maha Rose Center for Healing in New York, defines breathwork as “active meditation to reach higher states of consciousness and awareness” – a concept that sounds very New Age. Breathwork encompasses techniques that employ breath awareness and exercises to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Is There A Way To Practice Breathwork?

Breathwork can be practiced individually or in a group, either with a practitioner or at home. Sessions can last several hours and involve lying on a yoga mat while practicing controlled breathing, which may be uncomfortable. Many people report intense experiences, such as life-changing revelations, emotional releases, and even visions. Telford, an acupuncturist and Reiki master says that breathwork was one of her life’s most potent healing experiences, allowing her to release repressed emotions.

How Does Breathwork Benefit Your Health?

Danish researchers discovered that breathwork significantly enhanced participants’ moods, while a study published in the Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy suggested it could be beneficial in treating anxiety and depression. Breathwork expert Dan Brulé, who coaches elite performers like Navy SEALs, Olympians, and Tony Robbins, claims that mastering one’s breath can improve career success. Brulé believes that a simple breathing technique adjustment can unlock new abilities, skills, and possibilities.
