Warner Brothers studios officially announced in 2019 that the second installment in the Aquaman franchise, Aquaman 2 was in development. However, it wasn’t until recently that the director, James Wan, stated that the sequel would include touches of horror.
The first entry into the franchise, Aquaman, was released in 2018 and was also directed by James Wan. The film starred Jason Momoa in the titular role of the film’s submariner hero. Even though the character has been mocked for decades in his comic book form, the movie grossed a whopping $1 billion worldwide in the live-action version.
When the announcement came in early 2019 that there would be a follow-up sequel, it came as no surprise. The film has a current release date officially set on December 16, 2022, making it’s premiere four years after the original first film.
As many fans remember, we got a brief glance at Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. He returned for a more involved and character-revealing appearance in 2017’s Justice League.
During a recent Q&A with fans, Wan offered:
“Just like the first film had a touch of my horror sensibility in it, in regards to the Trench sequence, I would say there’ll be a little bit of that in this next one. I think it’s something that’s a part of who I am, and it just naturally comes out in these kinds of films.”
Wan is no stranger to elements of horror, as his background originates from that genre. With such hits as Insidious, The Conjuring, and co-writing The Nun, Wan has also proved that he can handle action films on a big budget, such as his work on Furious 7.
Principle filming on Aquaman 2 is not slated to being until well into next year, but with Wan’s recent tease, fans are sure to feel that the wait will be more than worth it.
