A little boy wept joyfully when he saw his mother in her wedding dress for the first time. It was Mekhi Sheffield’s privilege to walk Sommer Jean down the aisle with his grandmother at her wedding on January 8.
She realized there would not be enough time to see her son in his suit before the ceremony began in downtown St. Augustine, Florida. Jean, 34, a business analyst, tells TODAY.com, “I said to my makeup artist and hair stylist, ‘I guess I won’t get to do it,’ but they said they would make time.”

It was fortunate that Mekhi was nearby. He entered his mom’s bridal suite while Jean’s hair stylist filmed. “Oh, you look so handsome!” says Jean in a video shared on Facebook.
Mekhi said, “You look pretty, mom.”
Jean asked her son, “Are you ready to walk me down the aisle? Are you going to cry?”
Mekhi is overwhelmed by emotion and begins to cry as he nods.
TODAY.com reports that Mekhi doesn’t like to cry in public, but he broke down when he saw his mother look glamorous. She recalled, “When the camera turned off, I wiped his tears and reminded him to hold his arm as he walked me down the aisle. It made him proud.”

Despite holding it together, Mekhi became emotional again when he saw his future stepfather, Jeff Jean, 42. They met online in May 2021 and engaged on Thanksgiving Day a few months later. The proposal surprised Mekhi’s family, including Jeff’s future wife’s parents. After getting close to his stepfather, Mekhi’s mom says he has become less introverted.
Their “first look” video has received more than 7.6 million views on TikTok and other social media platforms, a “surreal” and humbling experience.
Jean said, “As a mom, you want everyone to see what you see, and that was the most beautiful moment I’ve ever experienced.”
