79-Year Old Finally Gets Driver’s License To Take Wife to Doctor

It’s never too late to learn to do something new, especially when you’re doing it for someone you love. That was the case when 79-year old Keith Limbert finally got his driver’s license.

Keith and his wife, Anne, also 79, have been married for 58 years. They met when they were 16 and have been together ever since. For almost the entire length of their relationship, Anne was the one who did the driving.

While Keith took driving lessons as a teenager, he never passed the test to get his license. Meanwhile, Anne passed her test in 1972 and did all the driving over the years as the couple raised their three children in West Yorkshire, England.

“I didn’t know how good I had it,” says Keith. “She would take me to race meetings and that meant I could have a drink…or two.”

Unfortunately, Anne’s days of driving ended in October 2015 when she suffered a stroke. That left it up to Keith to take the reigns as the driver in the family. Once again, Keith took driving lessons, and after two failed attempts he finally got his license.

Keith being able to drive is even more important now, as Anne was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months ago. She has regular doctor appointments, and now Keith can act as her chauffeur after it was the other way around for so many years.

“She has looked after me long enough and I think it’s about time for me to look after her now,” Keith says. “I owe her.”

Fortunately, it’s not all trips to the doctor for the couple. Keith being able to drive helps him and Anne enjoy their golden years, even if it just means getting a cup of coffee.

“I take Anne out every day to have a coffee and a scone,” shares Keith, “either to a garden centre or somewhere else.”

Surely, Anne misses driving, but she seems content with literally handing the car keys over to Keith.

“I think he has done brilliantly,” she says of Keith’s driving. “I drove him around for so long and now it is my turn to get driven about.”
