10-Year Old Delivers, Saves Life of Baby Brother Born Prematurely

Ten-year old Jayden Fontenot of Sulphur, Louisiana has a new baby brother, Daxx, thanks to, well, thanks to himself. Jayden helped to deliver and save the life of baby Daxx, who came a little early.

Jayden’s mom, Ashly Moreau, went into labor just 34 weeks into her pregnancy. After her water broke, she could already see her unborn baby’s legs and knew something was wrong.

Moreau’s fiance, Kelsey Richard, had just left for work, leaving her home along with 10-year old Jayden and her 11-month old daughter. Knowing both she and her baby were in trouble, Moreau had only Jayden to help her.

“I said (to Jayden), ‘You’re going to have to deliver your brother, and we have to do it fast because the baby’s feet are turning blue and he can’t breathe,'” Moreau explains. “He said, ‘Tell me what I need to do and I’ll do it.'”

Based on what she learned from doctors, Moreau believed the issue was a detached placenta. As she bled on the bathroom floor, Moreau knew should would have to talk Jayden through what to do to save the baby.

“He didn’t look scared,” Moreau recalls. He looked calm and brave and I said, ‘Okay, I’m going to tell you what to do and we need to get your brother out as fast as possible because he’s breeched and he can’t breathe.'”

Jayden managed to stay calm and followed his mother’s instructions.

“I wasn’t even thinking, I was amazed,” said Jayden. “I had to pull him by the legs — not hard, gently.”

Miraculously, Jayden had pulled baby Daxx out, only to discover that he wasn’t breathing. Jayden then ran to the kitchen and found a nasal aspirator to help clear the baby’s airway, allowing him to breathe.

EMTs soon arrived to take mother and baby to the hospital. Both are now doing fine, but EMTs say that without Jayden there both could have died.

“I don’t think he understands how heavy this is,” said Moreau, now a mother of three. “He saved me and his brother’s life. He is my hero.”
