I can still recall the first trailer for 2002’s “Spider-Man” that I saw in the theater during Summer 2001. It was a big and exciting display for first seeing the web-slinger on the big screen. To stop some criminals that have recently finished a robbery and are making their getaway in a helicopter, Spider-Man catches their vehicle in his web that he has weaved between the World Trade Center towers. Only after this display do we finally see the first look of Spider-Man zipping across the New York skyline.
Naturally, after the events of September 11th, 2001 that brought down the twin towers, this promo was quickly pulled from the marketing campaign and hasn’t been seen much since. While the promo could still be seen thanks to the magic of YouTube, some more restoration work has been done on this old promo to now display it in a glorious 4K video remastering. And we have the user Yoshi Killer2S with his pal Notelu to thank for this glorious gift.
Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” would go onto become a stellar trilogy and still holds up today as the tip-top template for establishing the iconic comic book character. Though Spider-Man has been remade multiple times since, the Raimi films remain such a strong trilogy that it’s a joy to finally see a somewhat “lost” promo given as much the star treatment the Blu-ray releases of the Raimi saga.
So, without further ado, check out the World Trade Center promo below and bask in its brilliant creativity.
