How Powerful Are Ivanka And Jared Exactly?

As we near the end of 2017, the First Family and their cohorts have had ample time to make awful choices. When President Trump appointed his oldest daughter and her husband to his senior staff, few people were surprised.

Ivanka led a panel in early July where she unveiled a World Bank fund that would help entrepreneurial women build their futures in developing countries. Upon finishing her presentation, President Trump explained to the panel that if Ivanka had been born to anyone else, “it would be so much easier for her. It might be the only bad thing she has going, if you want to know the truth.”

Badly Received From The Beginning

Around ninety percent of the residents in Washington, D.C. cast their votes for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. The Trump family wouldn’t enter the city state to any warm welcome. Predictably, Vanity Fair shredded the “power couple” (and the Trump presidency at large) in an October 2017 feature, labeling Ivanka and Jared as “exiles on Pennsylvania Avenue.”

The story goes into great detail with dramatically honest quotes from anonymous sources. “What is off-putting about them is they do not grasp their essential irrelevance,” a Washington veteran told reporter Sarah Ellison. “They think they are special.”

One former West Wing aide explained that Ivanka “tries to charm you at first, and then there’ll be the cutting remark in front of her father.”

“When they decide it’s more important to protect their own and their children’s reputations than it is to defend their indefensible father’s, that’s a sign the end is near,” said a Republican donor.

Trying, Failing, And Disengaging

Ivanka has made it clear that she wishes to shine her spotlight on issues including job creation and women’s empowerment, ranging from paid family leave to child care tax credits. As such, when President Trump began efforts to ban transgender people from entering into military service, his daughter would have surely opposed his actions and talked him away from the ledge.

It turns out that Ivanka learned of his ban just like the rest of us.

She read his tweet.

Preparing An Exit Strategy

“Trump is emotionally dependent on his son-in-law and his daughter,” said the aforementioned anonymous Washington veteran, “but they can’t do anything for him. All they can do is make him feel better about what his life has come to.”

Simply put, Mr. and Mrs. Kushner have plenty of inferred power, but so little influence over outcomes. President Trump relies heavily on their support and presence but seems to grant them little more than special treatment and favors.

Jared and Ivanka aren’t being pushed out of the White House, but they’re faced with the challenges of balancing a family act with sworn responsibilities to what is among the most important jobs in the world. There’s no debating that their lives were easier before Donald began his presidential campaign, after all.

According to yet another anonymous source, there’s been speculation that Jared and Ivanka are preparing an exit plan that could be put into place in the summer of 2018.

That’s just around the corner. Still, like the end of Donald Trump’s presidency, it feels like it’s a decade away.
