Illumination Studios is currently on a roll for Universal with last year’s highly successful “Despicable Me 3” and this month’s “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” looking to be another strong animated film. And with the forthcoming Super Mario movie planned by the studio, it’s clear they’re seeking the most marquee value at this time in their timeline. And this can best be seen in their next animated film planned for next summer.
“The Secret Life of Pets 2,” the sequel to Illumination’s 2016 pet-centric animated comedy, will feature the further adventures of the dog Max and his company of animal companions of the city. Max’s voice will now be portrayed by Patton Oswalt, replacing Louis C.K. after his controversy. Still, the film will feature the returning voice talents of Jenny Slate, Kevin Hart, and Eric Stonestreet. New additions to the cast will include Tiffany Haddish, Nick Kroll, Pete Holmes, and Harrison Ford (yep, he’s in here too). Also returning to helm this project will be director Chris Renaud and writer Brian Lynch.
Illumination will apparently be releasing character-focused trailers leading up to the release. The first focuses on Max being taken into a veterinarian office for what sounds like behavioral issues. He’ll find himself talking amongst the other unstable patients including a neurotic dog and twin cats that seem to start fires. Take a look at the trailer below:
“The Secret Life of Pets 2” will debut in theaters on June 7, 2019.
