As Disney prepares to launch its own streaming service next year, we’re starting to hear a lot about the original TV series and movies they have planned. We already heard details about the Star Wars live-action series produced by Jon Favreau and the potential live-action revisions of Disney animated classics gracing the Disney Play service. But with the recent cancellations of “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage” from Netflix, the big question is what Disney plans to do with their Marvel properties on this service. We now know they have some big plans in the works.
Disney is currently developing a duo series which will pair up Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson, better known as Winter Soldier and Falcon. Bucky was first introduced in “Captain America: The First Avenger” as Captain America’s friend who would later be transformed into a manipulated super soldier. Sam made his first appearance as Falcon in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” And, yes, if you’re wondering, it sounds like actors Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie may be interested in reprising these roles for a series. They’ve certainly been up for it in interviews where Stan has speculated how cool a Falcon/Winter Soldier movie would be:
“To me, it’s like Martin Brest film classic, Midnight Run, you know. It’s really just sort of in my head, like, 48 Hours or a buddy comedy from the ’80s or the ’90s. That’s how I see it.”
This comes as exciting news in addition to the announced Scarlett Witch show, as it seems the Marvel superheroes from the big screen will have more life on the small streaming screen as well. This is all early talk, however, and all we know for sure at the moment is that Malcolm Spellman will be screenwriting. We’ll most likely hear more on this show as Disney Play aims to launch in 2019.
